The Night London Burned

London, 1666 · Historical fiction · Designed for ages 7–10

Ned Hale is eleven and certain he’s ready to be a real carpenter. So when Mistress Finch’s gate breaks in his hands, he wedges it up, says nothing, and hopes nobody notices. That night, London catches fire. Mistress Finch is trapped in her yard, and the only way out to the river is through the gate Ned broke. The grown-ups can’t open it. Only Ned knows why, and only Ned can fix it, if he’s brave enough to say so in front of everyone.
